Alice-Mary Britton, age 78, of Pine Island, Florida passed away from congestive heart failure at Cape Coral Hospital in Cape Coral, Florida on February 8, 2001. Mrs. Britton was born January 19, 1923 to Wilbur and Madge Nichols in Peru, Indiana. On December 11, 1954, Alice-Mary married Lawrence J. Britton of Mishawaka at the Methodist Church of South Bend.

They had two children; Verne Britton of Morgantown, West Virginia, and Beth Britton of Mishawaka, Indiana, who survive, as does her husband. A sister, Josephine (Nichols) Richter of Spokane, WA, preceded her in death.

Mr. and Mrs. Britton resided at 918 Lincoln Way West in Mishawaka for 44 years before retiring to Pine Island in the Ft. Myers, Florida area.

Local viewing in Florida will be on Saturday, February 10, 2001 at the Coral Ridge Funeral Home on Pine Island Road from 2 to 6pm.

Visitation will be held from 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, February 15, 2001 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola, Indiana. Services will be conducted on Friday, February 16, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Alice-Mary graduated from Epworth Hospital School of Nursing (now Memorial Hospital) in 1944 and later received a B.S. degree in Education from Indiana University in 1954. She worked as a nurse at Epworth Hospital, as St. Joseph County Public Health Nurse, and as a school nurse first for the South Bend, and later Mishawaka school systems. She retired in 1979 from Mishawaka School City having also served as NEA local president and union negotiator during her career.

She was a longtime member of the Eastern Star Rose Croix Chapter 575 and past Worthy Matron (1972); was former treasurer of the St. Joseph Rifle and Pistol Association and statistical office assistant at the WA-KA-DE shooting range in Bristol, Indiana. She also was a member of the Central Indiana Folk Music and Mountain Dulcimer Society, as well as played viola in the South Bend Symphony Orchestra for many years (starting in 1941). She established the H&R Block Income Tax office in New Carlisle in 1980.

The Brittons moved to Florida in 1995, where Alice-Mary continued her music interests with the mandolin and violin. She was a member of the Gulf Coast Mandolin Ensemble, the City of Ft. Myers String Band, the Lee County Fiddle Support Group and the Pine Island Trio. She was a volunteer in the IRS VITA program on Pine Island.
